Where I grew up in Tennessee, professional wrestling was hugely popular. I was a kid during the second Golden Age of professional wrestling. While our parents had Gorgeous George, boys and girls in my day talked about Friday night matches between favorites like Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, and Hulk Hogan.
Even then wrestling had a charitable side–Hulk Hogan was the most requested celebrity for Make-A-Wish visits in 1980.
The WWE still maintains a strong focus on its charitable side with corporate social responsibility site, Community. WWE Community supports diversity, education, hope, and military charities and outreach programs.
WWE’s Be A STAR Program
The Be a STAR program encourages young people to Show Tolerance And Respect. Founded by The Creative Coalition and WWE in April 2011, the mission of Be a STAR is to ensure a positive and equitable social environment for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.
In a nutshell, it’s an anti-bullying initiative that works through grassroots efforts beginning with education and awareness. Be a STAR promotes positive methods of social interaction and encourages people to treat others as equals and with respect because everyone is a star in their own right.
Parents, if you are concerned about your child being bullied, please check out the Be a STAR resources for you. You are your child’s best, strongest advocate, and she needs your help if she’s being bullied.
S.T.A.R. Alliance
The Creative Coalition and WWE have created the S.T.A.R. Alliance, a group of actors, musicians, comedians, athletes, television personalities and members of The Creative Coalition, who have joined together to help put an end to bullying during Summerslam.
Members of the S.T.A.R. Alliance include: Quinton Aaron, Jose Bautista, Andrea Bowen, Erin Cummings, Tim Daly (Creative Coalition President), Daughtry, Omar Epps, Flo Rida, Skylar Grey, Tony Hawk, Alyssa Milano, Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne, Darius Rucker, and Pete Wentz. Altogether, some heavy hitters from the world of sports and entertainment.
The Creative Coalition, members of the S.T.A.R. Alliance and WWE will spread the Be a STAR message of showing tolerance and respect to help combat bullying.
S.T.A.R. Alliance members will also participate and share their stories at Be a STAR anti-bullying rallies across the U.S. as part of WWE’s community outreach events.
Take action by learning more about how your child can Be a STAR, and even start a Be a STAR chapter where you live.
Bullying isn’t like a disease like small pox. It won’t be stopped by a one-time shot. Bullying stops when ever kid knows it’s not okay to treat or be treated in way that shows a lack of respect for people’s differences. I hope that the information from Be a STAR helps children nurture a strong sense of respect both for themselves and for others.
Find out what’s new, what’s next, and how your kid can Be a STAR.

I love this program and fully support it. We love the WWE!
Wrestling is big here in Georgia too! This is a great anti-bullying program they are doing!
What I wouldn’t have given as a kid to be a wrestling star! There are tons of kids out there that love it.
This is such a great program from WWE! I love that so many organizations and companies are acting out against bullying.
What a great program! I will go and check it out!
I love that the WWE is encouraging young people with this program. Kuddos to them.
I think this is great program they are doing. Don’t watch WWE all the time, but catch it now and then.
This is great to hear! I’m so glad to hear that the WWE is being proactive against bullying. It’s such an important message.
Bullying has become such a huge problem. It’s nice to hear that such an important organization to kids is taking a big stand against it.
I use to watch the WWE a long time ago with my uncle. I think this is a great program!
This is great. Little boys (and probably some little girls as well) will probably listen to wrestlers about not bullying. Getting wrestlers involved was a great idea.
This is such a great idea. Little boys idolize wrestlers. I’m from Alabama, and I know I wanted to BE Hulk Hogan back in the day.
This is such a great idea. Young boys seeing big tough wrestlers coming out against bullying is a great way to send a powerful message to impressionable minds.
I’ve never watched professional wrestling. I can see how kids would try to copy some of the wrestles, so it is a good cause that they are combating bullying.
I think it’s great that WWE is trying to do good with children. Bullying is a big problem.
I love that this is anti-bullying. What an important thing!
Ah, I remember the days of Hulk Hogan. Wow, that brings back memories. What an awesome program; I’d actually never heard of it before now.

Seems like a really great program. I’d like to learn more about it. Thanks for sharing so much great info.
How cool is that! I spent most of my life in the south where wrestling is huge. It doesnt seem so big up here in the north.
i think it’s fabulous when organizations start to do anti bullying education. that’s the only way it WILL stop.
What a cool program. Thanks for sharing that you can start one in your own area!
I love that WWE is doing this. Great way to use their “celebrity” for good.
This is a really neat program! Anti bullying is so important.
I use to watch the WWE all the time as a kid. What a great program for them to be a part of.
I think that we must be the same age! We used to rent the WWF matches on PayPerView and have parties. LOL My favorite wrestlers were Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, the Ultimate Warrior, Jake the Snake etc. Ah, the good old days!
Glad that WWE is taking a stand for non-violence. I love this campaign idea
I am for anything that promotes anti-bullying. Such a great program
What a great program! It’s horrible how bad bullying is getting!
I’m not a WWE fan, but I like reading posts like this. It definitely lets you see another side to the organization.
What a great organization. I love hearing about organizations like the WWE getting involved in so many kids programs.
