When I was a kid I went to my grandparents’ house in Gallatin, Tennessee, for summer visits. I loved staying with them and wished I could be there all summer.
Sometimes I would go with one of my brothers, sometimes with my little sister. The very best trips were when I went all by myself. My parents had all four of us kids in five years, so pretending to be an only child for a week or two at Granny and Papa’s was The Dream.
I’d spend the day playing outside, reading my grandparents’ old books and magazines (Gone With the Wind, 50-year-old copies of National Geographic, ten-year-old copies of Reader’s Digest), and helping Granny hang her enormous and modest undergarments on the clothes line.
When Papa got home from his job at the electric company, he’d change into farming clothes and we’d get in his old white pick-up truck and go down to the farm.
At the family land outside of town my grandparents had a large garden and some tobacco land. I’d haul water from the creek for the garden and help weed. The best job was riding on the tractor. The worst job was squishing the bugs on the tobacco.
After farm chores we’d occasionally stop for cherry shakes at the Dairy Queen on Main Street. Thinking about it, we all got cherry shakes because that’s what Papa liked best. It was a huge treat to get a treat from a shop like that. My family can squeeze a nickel until the buffalo hollers, so treats were not thick on the ground.
The cherry shake was such a family tradition for all Papa’s kids and grandkids that after his funeral two years ago my uncle bought 50 cherry shakes, enough for everyone at the funeral lunch. Five kids, 10 grandkids, and 19 great-grandkids toasted my grandfather’s life with ice cream.
Sweet frozen treats can be an important part of our very best memories. Even though summer is ending, the good times with frozen deliciousness doesn’t need to even slow down. I know I keep single-serve icy desserts in my freezer all year.

This is a sponsored post from One2One Network. Product and additional incentives were provided to me. All opinions stated are my own, especially about the York Pepperment Patties. Although they do look like the very best kind.

What a great way to remember your Papa!
His hundredth birthday would be this November. Shakes for everyone!
Love Magnums!! But…those York Peppermint Patties look amazing…I might have to try those!!
Good luck! You could win coupons from me or on the Facebook sweepstakes. The only thing better than ice cream is FREE ice cream.
Those are lovely memories. I don’t think I’ve ever had a cherry shake. If I ever do, though, I’ll definitely drink it in honor of your Papa!
It’s a great shake. The only problem is the cherry bits get stuck in the straw sometimes.
I like the White chocolate Magnums.
I’ve never had those! That sounds really good.
We always had tuti-fruiti homemade ice cream at my grandparents in the summer
I remember making peach ice cream one summer. That was the best ice cream ever. Fresh summer peaches driven up in a bushel basket from Georgia…
Great memories. But of course anything with ice cream would make great memories!!! 🙂
The best kind of memories!
I like Popsicle grape flavor.
We call that flavor “purple”, but it’s my favorite Popsicle flavor anyway!
I love that I can hear your voice in my head reading this to me while I read it (does that make sense? lol). Such a neat story. I love how certain things can be wonderful memories.
I think that’s the very best part of meeting Internet friends. When you read their blogs, you can hear them talking.
i like the double caramel magnum! it’s fun to eat with friends!
I just got some of the double caramel Magnum last night! Can’t wait to try one. I’ve never had Magnum ice cream before. And all these brands were on sale at Kroger.
I love caramel magnums
Got to admit I am a through-and-through Bryers Vanilla Bean kinda girl, but that new Golden Oreo looks yummers!
I love the cherry shake story! Do you suppose everyone at my funeral will toast me with really good coffee? Really good wine would be a better option. A fine Italian Chianti, please. Alyssa and I first tasted Magnum in England. Were they released in the UK first or something? I can’t believe I didn’t know about them here. They are d.i.v.i.n.e.
ANY BREYERS BLASTS
Magnum bars are the bomb!
I love the Magnum with caramel and double chocolate-to die for!
Umm, without a doubt Magnum. None of those other brands come even close to Magnum’s perfection! 😉
I love Good Humor strawberry eclairs!
What a sweet memory!
I’m not sure I’ve met too much ice cream that I didn’t like. Sundae cone, Oreo, Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich … What’s not to love? And that’s just the Good Humor list.
Does Breyer’s even make a bad flavor?
I’d love to try the Mounds bar.
I haven’t tried it yet but I have a feeling the Magnum with caramel will be my favorite!
i love klondike bars!
