When I was little, products were only recalled if they contained poison, exploded into fiery balls of death, or both.
And then it would only be on the news once and maybe in the newspaper. Good luck learning your kids’ footie pajamas contained arsenic and kerosene if you had Little League practice that evening.
With the rise of the Internet and smart phones, you can search up everything you need to know, if you take the time and enter the right information.
Now you can easily get alerts for products and food safety right on your phone. Recalls Plus is a free app that tracks recalls. Also, you can create a Personal Watch Lists for products you use or for food allergies you might have.
Recalls Plus is available on Facebook, iPhone, and Android.
I tried it out on my Android phone and thought it was a cool, easy to use app. Someone in my house is allergic to seafood and shellfish. Now if, for example, our oatmeal gets contaminated with clam by-products in some hilarious factory mix up, we’ll get an alert.
I like that any alert for products or allergens on our Watch List can come straight to my Facebook page, if I choose. Because I’m there half the time anyway.
I think this would also be a real plus for households with little kids. If you use strollers, cribs, toys, or formula, you’ll be informed right away of any recalls. Because that is something you definitely want to know about right away.
Remember the contaminated formula a few years ago? Just this week, dog food was recalled. Imagine if you knew that as soon as it happened.
Have you ever benefited from knowing about a recall or suffered because of a bad product? Let me know in the comments.
